How to use this site: we explain logistics and day plans in plain English. Parks Tasmania sets fees, shuttle hours, track status and bookings.Always confirm on the official Cradle Mountain page, Parks Pass and shuttle information before you travel. This site does not show live closures.

Start at the Visitor Centre

Almost every successful Cradle day fails or succeeds here — not on the summit ridge. Master this sequence before you optimise for photos.

  1. Park at the Visitor Centre

4057 Cradle Mountain Road. During shuttle hours this is your car base — not Dove Lake.

  2. Parks Pass + shuttle access

Valid Tasmania Parks Pass required. Icon Day Pass includes shuttle; many other passes need a separate adult shuttle ticket. Verify fees officially.

  3. Board the shuttle

Stops typically include Interpretation Centre, Snake Hill, Ronny Creek, Dove Lake (~20 min one way). Confirm last return time before you walk.

  4. Walk within your weather window

Default: Dove Lake Circuit. Upgrade only if fitness, light and forecast support it. Cloud on the summit is not a failure — it is normal.

Pick one level — not all of them

The mountain can stay in cloud all day. A completed Dove Lake Circuit in safe conditions beats an under-prepared summit attempt. Always verify track status with Parks Tasmania.

Multi-day? The Overland Track is a booked wilderness walk — not a day-trip add-on. Book only via Parks Tasmania.

Alpine weather is not optional reading

  • Snow, wind, rain and cloud possible any month of the year.
  • Wet + cold + cotton = hypothermia risk on “easy” boardwalks too.
  • Waterproof shell, warm mid-layer, hat, gloves, food, water, headlamp.
  • Turn around early. Summit fever is not a strategy.
  • Drive slowly at dusk — wildlife on Cradle Mountain Road.
  • Official safety: Know before you go

Quick answers before you drive

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Do I need a Parks Pass for Cradle Mountain?

Yes. A valid Tasmania Parks Pass is required for national park entry. Purchase online at passes.parks.tas.gov.au or at the Visitor Centre. This site never sells park fees.

Can I drive to Dove Lake during the day?

During shuttle operating hours, private vehicles are not permitted on Dove Lake Road. Park at the Visitor Centre and board the shuttle. Campervans, motorhomes, caravans and trailers never use Dove Lake Road.

What is the essential first walk?

Dove Lake Circuit — about 6 km, Grade 3, commonly 2–3 hours with photos. Do it well before stacking Crater Lake, Marion’s Lookout or the summit.

Is the mountain always visible?

No. Alpine cloud can hide Cradle all day. That does not cancel Ballroom Forest or shoreline walking — it cancels under-prepared summit upgrades.

Shuttle times, Parks Pass prices, track conditions and closures change. Always verify with Parks & Wildlife Service Tasmania before you travel.
