1. Before you leave base

☐ Valid Tasmania Parks Pass plan (Icon Day Pass vs multi-park holiday pass)
☐ Know whether adults need a separate shuttle ticket
☐ Screenshot shuttle seasonal hours for your date
☐ Check road / community alerts if driving
☐ Fuel plan (local bowser may be limited — card only)
☐ Weather: alpine forecast, not only Launceston CBD
☐ Tell someone your plan and return time (longer walks)

2. Arrival process (non-negotiable)

Park at the Cradle Mountain Visitor Centre (not Dove Lake during shuttle hours).
Validate Parks Pass; organise Icon Day Pass or adult shuttle ticket as required.
Confirm last return shuttle from Dove Lake out loud with your group.
Board shuttle → Dove Lake (stops may include Interpretation Centre, Snake Hill, Ronny Creek).

Campervans / motorhomes / caravans / trailers: not permitted on Dove Lake Road at any time — shuttle only.

3. Half-day essential: Dove Lake Circuit

Timing (typical)

Visitor Centre process: 20–60+ min
Shuttle one way: ~20 min
Circuit: ~6 km, Grade 3, 2–3 hrs
Clockwise often preferred for classic reveal

Success metrics

Completed circuit safely
Caught return shuttle with margin
Did not “need” the summit
Cloud still OK — forest + lake count

4. Walk decision tree

First / limited time: Dove Lake Circuit only
Kids / poor weather: Enchanted + Rainforest / Weindorfers short walks
Fit + good weather after Dove Lake: Crater Lake (one extra only)
Experienced + clear day: Marion’s Lookout (not stacked after exhaustion)
Experienced alpine only: Cradle Summit Grade 5 — turn around early if unsure
Multi-day: Overland Track — official booking only (not a day add-on)

5. Alpine packing (day baseline)

☐ Waterproof shell (seam-sealed)
☐ Waterproof overtrousers
☐ Thermal base + fleece mid-layer
☐ Warm hat + gloves
☐ Sturdy waterproof hiking boots

☐ Day pack + rain cover
☐ Water 1L+ and snacks
☐ Headlamp
☐ Emergency blanket / bivy
☐ Offline note of last shuttle time

6. Weather realism

Snow, wind, rain and cloud possible any month
Mountain can stay hidden all day — still walk Dove Lake if valley tracks are safe
Hypothermia risk when wet + cold + under-dressed
If high routes are in white-out: stay low; turning around is skill

7. Overland Track (orientation only)

Typically ~80 km Cradle → Lake St Clair over 5–6 days
Main season: official booking required; check-in at Visitor Centre
Plan Lake St Clair exit transport before day one
